2010 Annual General Assembly Meeting. Speech of His Excellency Mr. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry Chairman of the Board of Directors

On behalf of my fellow board members and myself, I am honored to welcome you at this year’s General Assembly Meeting and to present to you the Seventh Annual Report of the Board of Directors with a brief overview of the main achievements of Qatar Fuel for the fiscal year 2009.

At the global level, 2009 was an extension of the current global economic and financial crisis, whereby the beginning of the year witnessed a sharp and unprecedented fall in oil prices, which dropped to US$ 38 per barrel after peaking at US$ 148 last summer.

Despite indicators of an economic recovery during the second half of 2009, this recovery remains fragile and moving with slow and stumbling steps. This makes it difficult to draw definite conclusions about the upcoming period and the global economic and financial situation.

As far as Qatar is concerned, the impact and reverberations of the global crisis were less severe than other countries. We can confidently say that the impact of this crisis on the State of Qatar has been very limited; and our local economy continued to achieve the positive growth rates we were used to record over the past years. This is due to the adopted economic and financial policies, which were based mainly on the diversification of sources of national income, supporting the national economy, banking and financial sector, and amending and developing laws and legislations that regulate and attract investment. This reflected positively on the protection of the national economy and helped in shielding it from any potential imbalances during the worst period of our global economy.

WOQOD Chairman inaugurates new LPG filling and distribution plant and launches first of its kind in the region lighter and safer 12kg LPG cylinder branded “SHAFAF”
Qatar Fuel (WOQOD) today inaugurated its new LPG filling and distribution plant which is located in the New Industrial Area of Doha. The plant was formally opened by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of WOQOD. In attendance were distinguished guests and senior managers from WOQOD.

In parallel to the inauguration of the new plant, WOQOD’s Chairman also announced the introduction of a new lighter and safer LPG 12kg cylinder under the brand name “SHAFAF”.

“SHAFAF is a fiberglass and plastic composite LPG cylinder that weighs just 5kg when empty, half as light as the steel cylinders in the market today,” said Mr. Mohammed Turki Al Sobai, WOQOD’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director. “This is the very latest technology in LPG cylinder design. There are significant safety and handling advantages with this new technology including proven capabilities such as the fact that this cylinder will not explode in a fire.”

SHAFAF will be available in 12kg and 5kg refill sizes, the smaller size designed for domestic kitchens and for portability for use outdoors such as at picnics. The initial price for the 12kg cylinder will be QR350 and the 5kg QR275. The LPG refill price remains QR15 for the 12kg cylinder and QR7 for the 5kg cylinder.

Initially SHAFAF will be available in all WOQOD service stations with a home delivery service to be introduced early in 2010. Both the plant inauguration and the launch of SHAFAF are major milestones for WOQOD.
